Methanol occupies a critical position in the chemical industry, as a highly versatile building block for the manufacture of countless everyday products such as paints, carpeting, plastics, and more.

In 2019, eight Chinese ministries, let by the powerful Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), adopted a policy position paper calling for the nationwide use of methanol in cars, trucks, and buses. A Brief Review of China’s Methanol Vehicle Pilot and Policy describes 20 years of research and development of methanol vehicles that led to this policy adoption. With this policy support, more than 28,000 M100 taxis and hundreds of M100 trucks are operating across China, with more coming off the assembly line and onto China’s roadways each day.
