Tim Chan joined the Methanol Institute (MI) as the Institute’s Manager for Government Relations and Business Development for the Asia Pacific and Middle East regions. Tim will be working on the Institute’s government relations strategy in Asia Pacific and Middle East, as well as looking into new applications for methanol to drive the expansion of the industry.  He has experience in climate change issues at various the national government and inter-governmental levels. His focus to date has been on how the global climate change discourse and national regulations are affecting the transport sector, primarily in the transport sector’s transition to cleaner fuels.  Tim graduated from Singapore Management University with a Bachelor’s in Political Science and Legal Studies.

Thomas Cotter is responsible for the Power to X strategy and business development at Clariant Catalysts. His focus is in the development and commercialisation of catalytic processes to enable sustainable fuels, energy carriers and chemicals including renewable methanol and downstream products. He joined Clariant in 2012 after completing a PhD in heterogeneous catalysis at the Fritz Haber Institute in Berlin and has held several roles in R&D and innovation project management.

The “Renewable Methanol: A Carbon-Neutral Fuel” webinar organized by the Methanol Institute will take place on August 5, 2020, at 1500HRS (CET). The webinar is organized with the support of presenting companies Clariant, Haldor Topsoe, bseEngineering, and Ørsted.

The global transition towards climate mitigation and greater sustainability has inspired a concerted effort from government, business, and society to find viable solutions to lower greenhouse gas emissions to meet the Paris Climate Agreement. This transition has led to renewable methanol gaining traction as a carbon-neutral solution for multiple industries. The benefits of renewable methanol are manifold. The production of renewable methanol relies on off-taking CO2 from industrial emitters which allows them to reduce their emissions while moving towards carbon-neutrality. Renewable methanol can then be utilized as a carbon-neutral fuel for multiple applications such as land and marine transport vessels to help them reach their own emission reduction goals.

The webinar will share the experiences of companies that are part of the renewable methanol value chain in various regulatory and commercial landscapes. The companies will also shed light on what they believe is the future of this sustainable solution as global industries move towards limiting their impact on their operating environments and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Sten Wranik was born in September 1980 in Leipzig (Germany). There he completed his legal studies at the University of Leipzig. He also received his international Master of Laws under the German Academic Exchange Service supported by Jagiellonen-Universityt Krakow, Johannes-Gutenberg-University Mainz and Ruprecht-Karls-University Heidelberg.

Since 2013, Mr. Wranik is inhouse council of bse Engineering Leipzig GmbH (BSE), which is an independent engineering and planning company for new, replacement and maintenance investments in the industrial plant construction.

In the course of his council Mr. Wranik deals with biofuels and chemicals from the technical, technological, regulative, material and commercial point of view together in an interdisciplinary team of BSE. Since that time various projects in industrial stage and research & development stage were implemented. The later involves the projects Funded by the Federal Ministry of Economy and Energy “MEEMO” (Methanol from renewable Energy for Mobility in Plug-in-Hybrid cars) and “C3 Mobility” (Closed Carbon Cycle) representing the public acceptance and interest of the Automotive Industry in Renewable and Power-based Methanol.

With foundation of bse Methanol GmbH in 2019 Mr. Wranik became Managing Director of this company whose object is business and technical advice as well as operational and construction planning, project management and project implementation for the methanol industry including process technology as well as trading in methanol and catalysts.

In June 2020, BSE launched the plant operation for flexible converting renewable electricity into bio-methanol in Stralsund (Germany).

Damien brings more than 20 years of experience from the global energy markets. Having managed a $4 billion commodities portfolio, he is skilled in Commodity Trading & Risk Management.

A Harvard Business School Alumni, Damien is a passionate advocate of Design Thinking to deliver solution driven Innovation. Within this field some of his proudest achievements include exchange-based product innovations listing and launching TTF now one of the leading global gas index hubs. Developing the world’s largest biomass generating plant in the UK and establishing the upstream US supply chain, equipped with a strategic transit terminal on the banks of the Mississippi River at the Port of Greater Baton Rouge.

Damien leads the Markets Innovation team at Ørsted, who are ranked the most sustainable company in the world, developing, constructing and operating offshore and onshore wind farms, solar farms, energy storage facilities, and bioenergy plants.

Today Damien is motivated by perhaps the biggest innovation challenge; to deliver a world that runs entirely on green energy.
