Global Low Carbon Methanol Supply Rapidly Expanding

February 26, 2024

The Methanol Institute (MI) has partnered with Finland’s GENA Solutions Oy on the development of a robust database of biomethanol and e-methanol projects. The database identifies 131 methanol production projects globally, with total projected capacity rapidly expanding to 19.5 million metric tons (6.5 billion gallons/24.6 billion liters) by 2028.

Methanol Institute Welcomes PMW Technology as a New Member

MI is pleased to welcome PMW Technology as our newest member. PMW Technology are the inventers and owners of a patented cryogenic carbon capture technology called A3C. The technology is able to capture up to 99% of CO2 from exhaust gases producing high-purity liquid CO2 directly from the process without a need for further treatment. This means that the captured CO2 is directly available for use in other industrial processes such as the production of e-methanol.

Joint Investment in Methanol Conversion Kits for Diesel Engines Paves the Way for Fossil Free Shipping

Marine design and engine developer ScandiNAOS AB, Chalmers University of Technology and the Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA) have launched a project to develop dual-fuel kits for conversion of new and existing diesel engines to methanol operation.

The methanol dual-fuel kit is unique since it will be generic and possible to fit to a large range of existing diesel engines of different brands. The kit will target engines up to 1000 kW and will accelerate the transition to low emission fuel and sustainable operations for marine and industrial applications.

Europe’s Shipping Sector Needs Certainty to Plan for Renewables Transition

Leading companies from across Europe’s fuel production chain have joined with NGOs to press the European Union’s legislators to provide the clarity and certainty they need to make long term investments in the renewable fuels required for the clean energy transition.

In a letter to the EU Council, Parliament and Commission, 47 entities, representing the entire value chain of green fuels including suppliers, users and maritime technology providers, have called for the maintenance of the proposed 2% sub quota of renewable fuels of non biological origin with the final text of FuelEU Maritime and its application to all shipping companies.

MI has welcomed comments made by the chairmen of China Merchants Energy Shipping and COSCO Shipping Bulk, that the two companies will focus on Methanol marine fuel as their primary area of research in the future.

CMES chairman Xie Chunlin and Gu Jinsong, Chairman of COSCO Shipping Bulk made the comments in a meeting held in late August, during which the two reviewed the co-operation between their companies and exchanged views on the shipping industry’s low-carbon transformation.

In his new role, Mr. Ólafsson will provide strategic vision and functional expertise in overseeing MI’s government and public affairs in Europe. He will lead stakeholder relations and the association’s undertaking to represent a strong voice for the methanol sector among policymakers in Brussels. Matthías succeeds Eelco Dekker who had served as MI’s Chief EU Representative since 2014.

Methanol Institute Debuts Video on FASTWATER Pilot Boat Project

The Methanol Institute (MI) and FASTWATER have released a video highlighting the benefits of Methanol as a marine fuel for small craft operating in ports and inshore waters. The film highlights the launch in late 2021 of the first pilot boat operated by the Swedish Maritime Administration converted to run on methanol by the FASTWATER consortium. The conversion is the first of a potential fleet conversion by the SMA, adopting Methanol to lower pollution and cut carbon emissions.

Methanol Institute Releases Fit for 55 Position Paper

In December 2015, policymakers from 175 countries came together in Paris to negotiate a historic treaty that set up a global framework to avoid climate change and limit global warming to 1.5°C. The Paris Agreement is the first universal, legally binding global climate change agreement. Although the EU has taken its commitment seriously, cutting GHG emissions by 23% compared to 1990 levels by 2018, EU policymakers sought to move further, towards carbon neutrality, and to transform the EU into a sustainable and yet competitive economy.

Liquid Sunshine Methanol-to-Hydrogen Station Opened to Support Beijing Winter Olympics

October 21st, the Liquid Sunshine Hydrogen Station demonstration was launched in China’s Zhang Jia Kou City, which is set to host the Winter Olympics in 2022. Led by Academician Li Can from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the liquid sunshine hydrogen station was jointly developed by Zhang Jia Gang Institute of Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP), CAS, and China International Marine Containers (CIMC) Enric. The station uses liquid sunshine methanol to produce hydrogen with a capacity of 50-100 kg/day along with CO2 recovery. The hydrogen produced at the station from liquid sunshine methanol will be used to support fuel cell vehicles operating during the Beijing Winter Olympics

METHANOL INSTITUTE RELEASES 2021 EDITION OF METHANOL MILESTONES

The 2021 edition of Milestones details both MI and the industry’s activities over the course of 2020, a year that was anything but normal. The COVID-19 pandemic drove economies to shut down, halted global travel, led an oil price collapse, and much more. For the Methanol Institute, 2020 brought both great challenges and exciting opportunities. MI worked hard to pivot our activities to maintain momentum and best position the industry for post COVID expansion. As we have sought new opportunities, funding for conferences, events, and pilot projects has moved to tabletop studies, consultant activities, and a strong push to increase our digital presence.

METHANOL INSTITUTE WELCOMES LIQUID WIND AS ASSOCIATION'S NEWEST MEMBER

The Methanol Institute (MI) is pleased to welcome Liquid Wind as our newest member company. Liquid Wind is a Power-to-Fuel Company committed to significantly reducing carbon emissions from shipping and transportation. Based in Gothenburg, Sweden, the company develops, finances, builds and manages facilities to produce renewable methanol. Each facility will combine captured biogenic carbon dioxide with renewable electricity in the form of hydrogen, to produce liquid, carbon neutral fuel. Liquid Wind has a strong Consortium, including Siemens Energy, Haldor Topsoe and Carbon Clean. The close collaboration and integration of leading technology will ensure production of cost-effective renewable methanol.

METHANOL INSTITUTE WELCOMES CLEAN ENERGY RESOURCES AS ASSOCIATION'S NEWEST MEMBER

The Methanol Institute is pleased to welcome Clean Energy Resources LLC (“CER”), as our newest member company. CER is a leader in applying circular economy principles, including large-scale carbon capture and refinery waste recycling to the hydrocarbon industry. It is currently developing the Lake Charles Methanol project near Lake Charles, Louisiana, which will be the world’s largest industrial carbon capture facility with a capacity of 4 million tons of methanol per year. Methanol is a clean burning fuel with uses in transportation, heating and downstream petrochemical industries. This is the first in a series of CER projects which produce zero-carbon products from petroleum waste and natural gas.

RIXIndustries is a technology-focused company specializing in the design, development and manufacturing of gas generation systems, precision compressor solutions, and cryogenic cooling technologies for critical applications in Marine, Aerospace, Land, Energy, Industrial, Medical, and Telecomm markets. Founded in 1878, the company is headquartered in Benicia, CA, and operates additional facilities in Sparks, NV (production) and Rockville, CA (Innovation Center).

IRENA AND METHANOL INSTITUTE RELEASE REPORT ON RENEWABLE METHANOL

The  International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and Methanol Institute (MI) released a joint report “Innovation Outlook: Renewable Methanol.” This comprehensive report discusses market status and outlook of renewable methanol for the main applications such as feedstock for petrochemicals and transport sectors such as shipping, car and truck fuel. It also elaborates on what policy actions are needed to facilitate an uptake of renewable methanol in the next decade.

CEN WORKSHOP AGREEMENT PUTS METHANOL IN POLE POSITION AS SAFE CLEAN ARCTIC FUEL

The Methanol Institute is urging the maritime community to take action to mitigate pollution and emissions risk in Polar regions by adopting Methanol as marine fuel, applying safe bunkering guidelines developed by the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN). Facilitated by the Safe Maritime Operations under Extreme Conditions: the Arctic Case (SEDNA), which advocates for an integrated risk-based approach to safe Arctic navigation, ship design and operation, the project secured a CEN Workshop Agreement on a process to address safety during bunkering of Methanol as a marine fuel earlier this year.

APPROVAL OF METHANOL GUIDELINES BY IMO WILL RELEASE ‘PENT-UP DEMAND’ FOR LOW CARBON ALTERNATIVES

The Methanol Institute (MI) has welcomed the adoption by the International Maritime Organization’s Maritime Safety Committee of interim guidelines on the use of Methanol as a marine fuel. The guidelines enshrine ethyl and methyl alcohols as options for marine fuel; a milestone the institute believes will be catalyst for more ship operators to consider Methanol as a low carbon compliance option.

The Methanol Institute (MI) is pleased to welcome Stena Bulk as our newest member company. Stena Bulk’s mission is to provide customers with safe and cost-efficient tanker transportation based on innovation and performance. Stena Bulk’s fleet consists of about 100 vessels and the company have offices in six countries. Stena Bulk is part of the Stena Sphere, which has around 20 000 employees in Sweden and abroad.

The Methanol Institute (MI) is pleased to welcome Australia’s Southern Green Gas as our newest member. Southern Green Gas is a renewable energy company pioneering world-first technology aimed at creating carbon-neutral fuels; renewable methane and renewable methanol. At the heart of Southern Green Gas’s technology is the ability to extract carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to create fuels that are not only sustainable, but also can be transported in existing infrastructure. Southern Green Gas’s approach is unique in the use of small production modules that are amenable to mass manufacture. The potential cost reduction benefits from this approach could allow a least cost transition to a low carbon vibrant economy.

METHANOL COULD BE THE MOTOR FUEL OF CHOICE TO MEET FUTURE TRANSPORT ENERGY DEMAND

Methanol could become a cost-efficient, clean and sustainable alternative to fossil fuel in transport, according to a new report* published by the International Energy Agency’s Advanced Motor Fuel (AMF) Technology Collaboration Programme (TCP). As climate change mitigation gains traction around the world, there is a growing need to reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of transport. Improving energy efficiency of engines is insufficient, and alternative fuels are required to further improve the environmental performance of different modes of transport.
