"For the past several months, California's Cleaner Burning Gasoline program has been closely evaluated by the state legislature. Last Friday, both the Senate and Assembly reaffirmed the importance of the state's principal air quality program, passing bills that will further ensure that clean air benefits continue without undue risk to water quality from contamination by leaking underground storage tanks. This was an important victory for the environmental community, the oxygenate industry, state air officials and for every citizen of California.

The bills call for further study of the use of MTBE and other oxygenates in cleaner burning gasoline, and for the establishment of drinking water standards. The oxygenates industry is confident that the University of California will echo the results of other national and state studies that have found the use of MTBE to be safe and effective. Setting reasonable health-based drinking water standards is an appropriate action, underscoring the fact that gasoline and its many components including MTBE must be properly handled and stored.

We encourage Governor Pete Wilson to sign these three bills and continue California's clean air leadership."
